Explore the Eclectic Barrios of Buenos Aires

Discover the extraordinary landmarks of Argentina’s capital & stay at an upscale hotel in the oldest neighborhood of the city.

About Your Trip

You'll get a real feel for the spirited city of Buenos Aires when you tour some of its most famous barrios (or neighborhoods) on this adults-only DreamTrip. But, first, visit a local cabaret for a welcome dinner with your fellow DreamTrippers and a performance of the lively tango, a popular regional dance on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Your tour adventure starts in the heart of the city at downtown’s main square, Plaza de Mayo. Bustling with pedestrians, it’s flanked by historically significant landmarks, including the Cabildo — a town hall from Spanish colonial days — and Casa Rosada — the presidential residence and site of the balcony from which Eva Peron delivered her famous speech. You’ll travel along the city’s culturally rich streets and avenues, including the famous car-free Calle Florida and the expansive Avenida 9 de Julio. Along the way, you’ll also make a special stop for a coffee at Cafe Tortoni on Avenida de Mayo. Established in 1858, it’s the oldest coffee shop in the country, visited over many decades by notable intellectuals, politicians and artists. You’ll head next to Caminito, the most famous street in La Boca neighborhood and a vibrant thoroughfare full of street vendors, sidewalk tango dancers and rainbow-hued houses. End your fabulous tour at La Recoleta Cemetery, an amazing aboveground cemetery lined with mausoleums and statues.

During your downtime, why not visit other great neighborhoods? In Retiro, you’ll find the Basilica del Santisimo Sacramento church, a gorgeous example of the city’s eclectic influences and home to one of the finest pipe organs in the world. You may also want to check out the trendy Puerto Madero, packed with restaurants, bars, shops and dazzling city lights that illuminate the port at night.

What we love:
• Avenida 9 de Julio is the widest avenue in the world and home to other landmarks like the iconic Obelisco and Teatro Colon, a world-renowned opera house.
• La Recoleta Cemetery — resting place of Eva Peron, numerous Argentinian presidents and many other national luminaries — has been noted by CNN and the BBC as among the world’s most beautiful cemeteries.
• Buenos Aires has an edgy and active street-art community, attracting local, national and international artists to come work their magic on the city’s abandoned buildings and blank walls.

Destination

Sometimes referred to as the “Paris of South America,” Buenos Aires is a thriving metropolis with a multicultural heritage stemming from its open acceptance of immigrants since its founding. The city’s numerous foreign influences can easily be seen in its eclectic European-inspired architecture.

As a cultural epicenter of Latin America, the city is a leading patron of the arts and social enrichment, which is evident throughout the city. Buenos Aires boasts more bookstores per capita than any other city in the world, as well as the busiest live theater industry in Latin America. Numerous museums and art galleries dot the city, which is also an important center of contemporary street art, and Río de la Plata is known for being the birthplace of the exhilarating tango.

Social gatherings commonly involve sharing a meal, and the local cuisine is a blend of indigenous and Mediterranean influences, with fare like asado (Argentine barbecue) and the flavorful herb sauce chimichurri originating there.
